Spreadsheet table editor

Edit cells and formulas, format results and publish LaTeX tables.

Open Write → Table editor for a focused spreadsheet interface that publishes ordinary LaTeX. This is useful when you want to edit a presentation table directly rather than define a Figure Studio table recipe over a dataset.

Create or import a sheet

Start blank, paste a rectangle from Excel/Sheets, import a workspace CSV/TSV, or copy a rendered Figure Studio table. Imports are independent editable copies. Editing them does not rewrite the original dataset or Studio recipe.

Choose the header row and enter descriptive column names. Keep units in headings where possible. A row labelled only “Ours” may need a caption explaining the model and evaluation setting.

Edit and navigate cells

Click a cell and type to replace its value. Double-click, Enter or F2 edits the existing value. Arrow keys move, Shift extends a selection, and Tab advances. Drag across cells or select row/column headers for ranges. The formula bar edits the active cell.

Copy exports selected displayed values. Paste expands the grid as needed. Undo/redo keeps up to 50 edits in the current session. Add/remove rows or columns and use fill down for repeated formulas.

Sorting is supported for value-only tables. Formula tables cannot be sorted because moving dependent values without a complete spreadsheet dependency rewrite could change the result.

Calculate with formulas

Supported expressions include arithmetic, parentheses, A1 references, absolute references, ranges, and SUM, AVERAGE, MIN, MAX, COUNT.

text
=B2-C2
=(B2-C2)/C2
=AVERAGE(B2:B6)
=SUM(B2:D2)
=B2/$B$8

$B$8 pins the row and column while relative references can adjust during fill. A leading apostrophe makes a leading equals sign literal text. Formulas never execute JavaScript.

Visible formula errors block publishing and export. Check referenced cells, division by zero and unsupported function names. This is not a full Excel engine; XLSX import and arbitrary spreadsheet functions are not supported.

Format the publication table

Apply bold/italic to ranges, then set column alignment, decimal precision, percentages or best-value emphasis. As entered preserves leading zeros and trailing decimal places. Display precision does not round the underlying stored value.

Choose horizontal/minimal rules, caption and reference label. Inspect the publication preview and then compile the manuscript: final typography and width follow the paper. The editor does not automatically shrink a wide table to fit.

Use clear precision. Reporting six decimals from a noisy experiment rarely improves meaning, while an ID such as 0012 may need to remain text. Best-value highlighting is only appropriate when the comparison direction and experimental setup justify it.

Save, publish and insert are separate

  1. Save table stores the editable draft in .versofold.tables.json.

  2. Publish to paper creates a named manuscript checkpoint and writes portable LaTeX under tables/edited/table-<id>.tex.

  3. Insert into manuscript places a wrapper, caption, label and input reference at the current source cursor.

  4. Recompile and inspect the PDF.

Later publications update the linked generated file. Merely saving a changed draft does not change the previously published manuscript output. External edits to the output, stale revisions or dirty buffers block overwriting until resolved.

Export and limits

CSV/TSV downloads contain computed displayed values; TeX downloads contain escaped formatted source. Formulas remain in the editable draft, not the value export. Spreadsheet-looking literal strings are neutralized in CSV/TSV exports.

Current limits are 40 tables per paper, 300 rows and 26 columns per table, 2,000 characters per cell and 2 MB import text. Merged cells and arbitrary LaTeX-table parsing are not supported.

For reusable data-derived tables use Figure Studio. For manuscript values that need explicit update review use Linked results. For final fit use Page layout.
